Starting at 5:50, there will be an informal gathering of new and continuing students, designed primarily to help the incoming group to get to know their classmates and faculty. Pizza and drinks will be available.
From 6:00 to 6:15, there will be brief welcomes to the School of Communication & Information (SC&I) and the MLIS program -- Dean Jorge Schement and Claire McInerney, Department of Library and Information Science (LIS) Chair; also, brief announcements from Associate Dean Karen Novick and Faye Brown, Administrative Assistant.
From 6:15 TO 6:20, Students will introduce their associations--Special Libraries Association Student Group (RUSLA), American Society for Information Science Student Chapter(RUASIS), Student Organization for Unique and Rare Collections Everywhere (SOURCE), Rutgers Association of School Librarians (RASL), and the American Library Association student chapter, Library and Information Science Student Association (LISSA). Each group will have handouts about their mission and plans and activities and will seek to recruit new members. All students, however, are automatically members of LISSA.
From 6:20 to 7:30, faculty and administrators present will identify themselves, and the rest of the time will be devoted to meeting each other informally, connecting names and faces, asking questions, and generally getting to know each other.
Please note that new students who have registered for classes starting at 6:20 will be hearing from their instructors about a later start time.
Scheduled for Friday, September 11th at 4:30, the tour begins in the Scholarly Communication Center, 4th floor, Alexander Library, with an introduction to the librarians who will be your guides, and a brief review of what's new in the way of library resources and services. This annual program is a great way to get to know the librarians and to get a behind-the-scenes look at some of the more mysterious aspects of a large academic library. Our library liaison, Myoung Wilson, invites you to let her know what you would especially like to see and/or hear about. She can be reached at mywilson@rci.rutgers.edu.
Held irregularly on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, MLIS colloquia are opportunities to hear about current issues and developments in the library/information field from visiting speakers. While you have to register for this as a non-credit course (610:502) during one semester before graduating (next-to-last semester is recommended), you are encouraged to attend at any time that a topic is of interest to you (no registration necessary). Colloquia are announced on the LISSA electronic discussion list. As of now, the first two are set for Sept 23 (re our identity) and Oct 21 (Google books) -- mark your calendars and save the dates!
